History & General Education Requirements

  • The History major or minor fulfills your "Arts & Humanities" general education requirement
  • A History minor is an excellent alternative to doing an "Arts & Humanities" cognate, especially if you are bringing in AP History credits. Students bringing in 2 AP History credits will only have to take 3 History courses at UM for a minor, which is the same number of courses required for a cognate

AP & Transfer Credit

  • If you earned a 4 or 5 on any of the AP History Exams, you can earn UM course credit:
    • AP U.S. History is equivalent to 6 credit hours (HIS 101, 102)
    • AP European and AP World History are each equivalent to 3 credit hours (HIS 132 and HIS 192)
  • Credit hours from other institutions may be counted toward the History major or minor, but departmental approval is required in each case.
  • Keep in mind that a minimum of 18 credit hours of the History major and 9 credit hours of the History minor must be completed at UM.

Departmental Honors

Students interested in writing a History Honors Thesis should first take a 500-level seminar in a topic in the field of study that they hope to pursue in their thesis. The student should discuss the possibility of writing an honors thesis with the seminar's instructor and, if that professor agrees to serve as their thesis advisor, the student will then enroll in HIS 597 the following semester as an independent study under that professor's supervision. Upon successful completion of the thesis in HIS 597, the student will earn departmental honors at graduation. For further information, please see the department's website.
